Free Permaculture Design Course – Regenerative Leadership Institute

I haven’t had a chance to review this, but the Regenerative Leadership Insitute appears to be offering the 72 hour Permaculture Design Certificate course for free – http://www.permaculturedesigntraining.com/. If anyone reviews their website and the offer, it would be fantastic if you could post any comments here on this site for others :o) Penny

It appears that the content of the course can be accessed for free, which includes lectures and access to a community forum. However, to complete the certification there is a cost ($425 plus fees) and it involves completing an exam and a design project.
It’s a good way to access the material to get an understanding of permaculture or to get a head-start on the certification content.

I was looking at this – you have to pay $290 to get the actual certificate (which still sounds like good value).

When I did a bit of googling I came across some bad reviews for the RLI. There is also a Regenerative Design Institute which has a good name, and it took a while for me realise that they were 2 separate things.

I think you can still audit the classes online for free(I have signed up to do this) but won’t get the actual certificate and can’t do the assessment.

Still – it has got me thinking about doing a course like this sometime …

I wouldn’t bother with the RLI course

If you want to learn about permaculture then the permaculture manual written by Mollison is all you will need.

If you prefer the manual presented to you without annoying emails inviting you to pay for the actual certificate ($290)then there is a series of good quality lectures (unlike RLI’s) here http://courses.ncsu.edu/hs432/common/podcasts/

If you prefer the manual presented to you face to face, enjoy the camaraderie and the sharing of knowledge of like minded people and have a spare $1000 or so then enrol in a traditional PDC. You will be awarded a certificate which has no worth outside of the permaculture community.

If you think you might want to practice permaculture professionally there is Accredited Permacutlture Training now available from your local TAFE college face to face or by distance education. These certificate level courses are starting to gain acceptance by local government authorities and other employers.

  • I have signed up for the free access and love it. Larry Korn, the first presenter is wonderful. He recommends Gaia’s Garden by Toby Hemenway as a great textbook. I just delete the emails from RLI to buy the course.
